Types of stud bolts

Stud bolts are typically used in larger buildings or heavy machines. Although their design looks very simple, they serve highly robust functions. Stud bolts are classified into two types: A and B. Type A stud bolts, commonly referred to as coarse-thread bolts, have a thicker shank, while Type B stud bolts, known as fine-thread bolts, have a thinner shank.

The main models of American standard stud bolts include ASTM A193/B7, ASTM A193/B8, and ASTM A193/B8M and so on.

Why use studs instead of bolts?

The advantages of stud bolts include reducing the number of bolts needed, simplifying the assembly process, and saving material costs. However, their downside is a lack of stability, making them prone to loosening under high tension.

Compared to regular bolts with head, stud bolts are more convenient to install due to threads on both ends. During assembly, either end can be fitted with a nut first, allowing for alternating tightening at both ends, which ensures balanced assembly.

Because of their threaded design on both ends, stud bolts provide a better fastening result and can afford greater tension, ensuring the secured objects remain more stable. Additionally, stud bolts are better at handling vibrations and impacts, avoid the risk of loosening during use.
