Socket head cap screws is a type of screws for machinery. Its head is round on the outside with a hexagonal indentation in the center, usually installed using an Allen wrench. This type of screw has multiple names, also referred to as an Allen bolt, socket head screw, or hex socket screw—all meaning the same thing.
Based on material, there are stainless steel and carbon steel options. For stainless steel, there are SUS202 standard stainless steel hex socket head screws, as well as SUS304 and SUS316 versions. Carbon steel hex socket head screws are classified by strength grade, including 4.8, 8.8, 10.9, and 12.9. Grades 8.8 to 12.9 are considered high-strength, high-grade socket screws.

When an socket screw has been used for a long time or improperly handled, it can sometimes become “stripped,” meaning the hex shape on the screw head has worn down, making it difficult to grip with standard tools. However, with the right techniques and tools, we can still remove it effectively. Here are some recommended methods:
1.Use a Screw Extractor
A screw extractor is specifically designed to tackle stripped screws. It typically has a reverse-threaded structure that, when inserted into the screw’s hole, uses friction or thread engagement to pull the screw out. To use, align the extractor’s tip with the screw hole, tap it gently to embed, and then rotate the extractor counterclockwise to gradually remove the screw.
2.Combine with a Power Drill
If the screw extractor alone isn’t effective, try using it with a power drill. Attach the extractor to the drill, then rotate it counterclockwise at a low speed to increase force and stability. Be mindful of the pressure to avoid damaging surrounding materials.
3.Make a DIY Extractor
If you don’t have a professional extractor, you can try making one. Use a piece of high-hardness wire or a small-diameter drill bit, sharpen it to a point, and slightly bend it to form a hook shape. Insert this hook into the screw hole and try to catch onto the remaining internal threads, then slowly apply force to twist it out.
4.Welding Method
In extreme cases, consider welding a small nut or bolt onto the top of the stripped screw. This creates a “handle” that you can then grip with a wrench or socket wrench to twist out the original screw. This method requires welding skills and may cause heat damage to surrounding materials.
5.Chemical Dissolution Method
Use a chemical solvent, such as penetrating oil or rust remover, applied to the screw hole. This helps to soften rust and binding agents, making it easier to remove the screw. Allow time for the solvent to fully penetrate. Note that some solvents can harm plastic or rubber components.
