Dry Stone fixings are usually used in construction industry. It means the various systems, tools used to securely fix stone cladding, tiles, or decoration panels to a building's structure or other surfaces. These fixings are essential for ensuring the stone is held in place firmly, especially in architectural applications where stone cladding, flooring, or decorative panels are used. Typically There are 4 types mechanical stone fixings.

Anchor Bolts: Metal bolts, usually stainless steel or galvanized, that penetrate both the stone panel and the building’s structure. These bolts securely anchor the cladding in place and are often used for heavy stone or large panels.

Brackets: Metal brackets support the stone panels by connecting them to the building structure. They offer stability and are commonly used in curtain wall systems.

Undercut Anchors: Installed into pre-drilled holes on the back of the stone, undercut anchors provide hidden support, allowing for a cleaner, frameless appearance. These anchors are especially useful in thin stone cladding panels.

Stone Fixing Clamps: Clamps can be used to grip the edges of stone panels and hold them in place. They are typically attached to metal framing, offering flexibility and easy installation.

Mechanical stone cladding fixings must be made from materials that offer strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion, particularly when used in external environments. The materials need to withstand the load of the stone panels, environmental conditions, and forces like wind, seismic activity, or temperature variations. Here are the common materials used for mechanical stone cladding fixings:

1. Stainless Steel

• Grade 304 or 316

  : Stainless steel is one of the most widely used materials for mechanical fixings in stone cladding due to its high strength, corrosion resistance, and durability. For exterior applications, Grade 316 is preferred because of its superior resistance to corrosion, particularly in coastal or industrial environments where exposure to salt or pollutants can be a concern.

• Applications: Stainless steel is used in anchors, bolts, brackets, clamps, and undercut anchors.

2. Galvanized Steel

• Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel: This steel is coated with a layer of zinc to prevent corrosion. It offers a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel, especially for less exposed applications. However, galvanized steel is less durable than stainless steel and may corrode over time if the protective zinc layer is damaged or worn away.

• Applications: Galvanized steel is often used for brackets, clamps, and framing in less demanding environments.

3. Aluminum

• Anodized or Powder-Coated Aluminum: Aluminum is lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making it a suitable material for stone cladding systems, especially in framing systems and rail systems. Anodizing or powder-coating enhances its corrosion resistance and appearance.

• Applications: Aluminum is commonly used in rail and channel systems, frames, and brackets, especially in ventilated facade systems.
